Full Groundworks and Structural Steel Package
BVMH Groundworks were appointed by Dual Construction to deliver the full groundworks and structural steel package for a landmark new build project in London. At 380 m² footprint, this development represented one of the largest individual new builds we have undertaken to date – both in terms of physical scale and operational demand.
Our scope of works included a significant reduced dig, management of over 100 loads of muck-away, and the installation of a full steel frame structure. With a challenging six-week programme, precision planning and careful coordination with the main contractor were essential to hand over the site back to the developer on time and to specification.
The Project
Our works covered:
- Major reduced dig – excavation and muck-away exceeding 100 loads, all managed with our in-house fleet.
- Groundworks delivery – including foundations, drainage and enabling works.
- Steel frame installation - Steel frame installation – taking responsibility for supply, erection, and final delivery of the structural steel package.
- Programme management – ensuring each stage of excavation, civils, and structural installation was sequenced without delay.
On completion, we handed the project back to the developer as a fully prepared site with the steel frame standing – ready for the main contractor to progress with the build.
Challenges & Solutions
The scale of this project presented its own logistical challenges. A reduced dig of this size in a London location required:
- Traffic management and haulage coordination to move over 100 loads of muck efficiently without impacting neighbouring properties or access.
- Tight site conditions – with limited space for plant and materials, sequencing was key. Our direct control of plant and fleet allowed us to maintain a smooth flow of works.
- Integration of steelworks – taking responsibility for the steel frame added another layer of complexity, but also meant we could ensure the groundworks and frame aligned seamlessly.
By maintaining close communication with Dual Construction, our team resolved issues proactively, keeping the project on track within its six-week schedule.
Tools, Tech & Teamwork
For this large-scale build, we deployed:
- Excavators and haulage vehicles from our own fleet to manage the reduced dig.
- In-house groundwork teams to deliver the foundations, civils, and drainage.
- A dedicated steel frame crew responsible for assembly and installation.
- On-site management ensuring safety, sequencing, and daily progress reporting.
Client Feedback
Dual Construction commented:
“BVMH took on a tough package here – from shifting over 100 loads of muck to taking on the steel frame. Their ability to manage both the groundwork and structural side made coordination much easier for us as the principal contractor. They hit the ground running, stayed on programme, and handed back a site ready for us to continue without delay. A professional job all round.”
Reflections
This project stands out as one of BVMH’s largest single new builds delivered to date. Beyond the sheer scale of the reduced dig, the integration of groundwork and steel frame installation showcased our ability to handle multi-disciplinary packages under pressure. By maintaining efficiency, accuracy, and strong communication throughout, we ensured the developer received a site that was not only completed on time but also built to a standard they could depend on.
